The acclaimed book author was born William Paul Smith in Albany, Georgia. Known as Billy since birth, he was nicknamed "BP" by close friends and family. Billy graduated from the University of Georgia in 1975 where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
His interest in writing began when friends suggested he write a book exposing the dark side of the legal process in the United States. Taking copious notes from more than 50 hours of phone calls, he began writing the story in 1995. Abuse of Process completed in 1998. It was published in 2001 and achieved regional success.
After the release of his first book, he started several other book projects, Pro se, Disbarred and Flight 3911. During the COVID 19 pandemic and quarantine, Billy decided to complete Flight 3911 with plans to release it coinciding with the 20th anniversary of 9/11. He has completed the outline for a sequel to Flight 3911 and plans to continue writing and complete his earlier two projects.
Billy’s family business, Smith Consulting Group (SCG), served Military Surplus Asset (MSA) projects all over the world for over 55 years. SCG performed the demilitarization (DEMIL) process on tanks, aircraft, M151 Jeeps and supporting parts, and guns. All work was performed within DRMS DEMIL regulations and guidelines. Historical highlights include demolition and recovery of the Gemini Space Program for NASA in 1970, Firestone Tire and Rubber in 1984, Gulf States Paper in 1990 and the remarketing of Canadian MSAs in South America from 2006-2010.
Billy has always felt an obligation to get involved when he saw flaws in systems, not only in business, but in government systems as well. In February 1998, he was asked to testify before the President’s Senate Subcommittee for the National Bankruptcy Review Commission (NBCR) in Washington, DC. Then in March 2002, Georgia Governor Roy Barnes asked Billy to testify before the state legislature on SB 476, a health care bill. He was uniquely qualified to explain abuses in the methods used to handle health claims by hospitals and insurance companies. The bill passed one month later.
Billy has been a pilot for 40 years with 3500 hours flight time . He has flown everything from single engine four-seat airplanes to Lear Jets, Citations and King Air. Hobbies are golf, writing and flying. He is married to Drenda Parker Smith. They enjoy his two sons, her three daughters and six grandchildren. Billy retired in 2009 from his family business, Smith Consulting Group LLC.
