Meet the Author of Abuse of process and Flight 3911
Billy Paul Smith was born in Albany, Georgia, and has been known simply as “Billy” his entire life. A graduate of the University of Georgia and a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, he developed an early interest in storytelling and the real‑world systems that shape people’s lives.
His writing career began when friends encouraged him to expose the darker side of the American legal process. After more than 50 hours of recorded conversations and years of research, he completed Abuse of Process in 1998. The book was published in 2001 and achieved regional success, establishing Billy as a compelling new voice in legal‑themed fiction.
Billy went on to develop several additional projects, including Pro Se, Disbarred, and the 9/11‑inspired thriller Flight 3911. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, he completed Flight 3911 with the goal of honoring the courage and sacrifice of the passengers of United Flight 93. The novel was released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
He is currently developing the next chapter in the Brandon Powell story — a new thriller scheduled for release in Summer 2027.
Before retiring in 2009, Billy spent decades leading his family business, Smith Consulting Group (SCG), which performed demilitarization and surplus asset recovery projects around the world. His work included major contracts for NASA, Firestone, Gulf States Paper, and international MSA programs.
Billy has also testified before both federal and state government bodies, including the National Bankruptcy Review Commission and the Georgia Legislature, offering insight into systemic abuses in healthcare and legal processes.
A pilot for more than 40 years with over 3,500 hours of flight time, Billy has flown everything from single‑engine aircraft to Learjets, Citations, and King Airs. He enjoys golf, writing, flying, and spending time with his wife, Drenda, their combined family of five children, and six grandchildren.
