The Real-World Roots of the Brandon Powell Series

Every great thriller series starts with a question the author cannot stop asking. For me, that question was simple: what happens when the system designed to protect people becomes the weapon used against them?

That question did not come from imagination. It came from years spent inside the American legal system — watching cases unfold, seeing how power operates in courtrooms, and understanding firsthand how thin the line is between justice and its opposite.

A Career That Became a Canvas

Before I ever typed the first word of Abuse of Process, I had lived inside the world I was writing about. The procedural details in the Brandon Powell series are not researched — they are remembered. The courtroom tension, the backroom negotiations, the way a single document can unravel a life — all of it is drawn from real professional experience.

Brandon Powell himself is not based on any one person. He is a composite of every sharp, principled, quietly relentless attorney I have ever known or worked alongside. The kind of person who does not make speeches about justice — he just pursues it, methodically, even when the odds are stacked against him.

Why the South Carolina Lowcountry?

Setting matters enormously in crime fiction. The Lowcountry — with its Spanish moss, its old money, its complicated history and its insular social structures — is a perfect stage for the kind of stories I wanted to tell. It is beautiful and suffocating at the same time. Secrets keep well in that kind of heat.

The region also carries a particular tension between old power and new accountability that runs through every book in the series. When Brandon Powell walks into a Lowcountry courtroom, he is not just fighting a case. He is pushing against something much older and more entrenched.

Abuse of Process: Where It All Began

The first book in the series, Abuse of Process, introduced readers to Brandon Powell through a case that tests every principle he holds. The title is not just a legal term — it is a description of what happens when the machinery of the law is deliberately turned against the innocent.

Writing that book was the most direct translation of professional experience into fiction I have ever attempted. The procedural details are accurate because they had to be. Readers who know the law will recognize the authenticity. Readers who do not will simply feel it.

Flight 3911: Raising the Stakes

The second book took Brandon Powell out of the courtroom and into a crisis with national implications. Flight 3911 is a different kind of thriller — faster, broader in scope — but it is still rooted in the same core question: who do you trust when the institutions you rely on have been compromised?

Writing a thriller that spans multiple jurisdictions and involves federal-level stakes required a different kind of research. But the emotional core — a protagonist who refuses to stop pulling on a thread even when everyone around him says to let it go — that came from the same place as the first book.

False Record: The Series Reaches Its Peak

False Record, the third book and the most recent release, brings the Brandon Powell arc to what I consider its most complex and satisfying point yet. The Georgia Lowcountry setting, the Murdaugh-era backdrop, the layered deceptions — this book demanded everything I had learned across the first two.

It is also the book where Brandon Powell feels most fully realized as a character. By the third novel, I knew him well enough to put him in situations that genuinely surprised me as I was writing them.

What Comes Next

The Brandon Powell series is not finished. There are more stories to tell in this world, more cases that demand his particular combination of legal precision and moral stubbornness.

If you have not started the series yet, Abuse of Process is the place to begin. If you have already read all three, stay close — there is more coming.
